Set-up guide
Up and running in 5 minutes
No coding needed. Follow these six steps and every image on your site will describe itself.
- 1
Download the plugin
Grab the zip file from the download page. Keep it zipped.
- 2
Upload to WordPress
In your WordPress dashboard go to Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin, choose the zip and click Install Now, then Activate.
- 3
Get an OpenAI API key
Sign in at platform.openai.com, open API keys and create a new key. Then go to Billing and add a small credit (e.g. $5) — the API has no free tier. Set a monthly limit for peace of mind.
- 4
Paste the key into the plugin
Click AI Alt Text in the WordPress sidebar, paste your key and click Save Changes. You'll see a green tick if it works, or a red warning explaining what's wrong.
- 5
Choose what gets updated
Tick which fields the AI should fill: alt text, title, caption, description and tooltip. Choose whether to overwrite text you've already written.
- 6
Scan your existing images
Click Start scan and keep the page open. You'll see each image being processed. New uploads from now on are handled automatically.
Troubleshooting
- "API error 401" — the key is wrong or was deleted. Create a new one and paste it again.
- "API error 429: no credits" — add credit in your OpenAI billing page, then rescan.
- Nothing happens on a quiet site — use the Start scan button; it works without waiting for visitors.
Stop writing alt text by hand
Install the plugin in two minutes and let every new image describe itself.
